This is a page where we can share recent opportunities and events that Out Fly Fishing outfitters has been fortunate enough to be apart of. We are fortunate to have so great people in our crew who do as much as they can to help promote this industry. We hope you enjoy some of the projects we’ve been fortunate enough to be involved with.
Back in January WFN came out to Calgary and filmed a piece for their World Fishing Journal on the Bow River Post 2013 Flooding and the piece just aired in April. Calgary’s Chief of Police (A regular OFF guest) Tourism Calgary Representative, Local Fishing Celebrity Jim McLennan and OFF’s very own Josh Nugent were all interviewed regarding the effects of the floods on the river and its current and still world class status. WFN even attended and recorded portions of Josh’ “Post Flood” Presentation at the Western canadian Fly Fishing Expo. OFF is very grateful to have been included in WFN’s story and happy to see the media coming together to shine a positive spotlight on our incredible and world class fishery!

Another one of Naoto’s incredible photographs has graced the cover of another magazine, Fly Fusion Magazine this time. Inside the magazine is an article Josh wrote detailing the effects of the floods on the Bow river and the 2013 flood compared to that of 2005. Josh also presented on this at the 2013 Western Canadian Fly Fishing Expo at Spruce Meadows.
The Annual Fishing issue of Outdoor Canada gives a great deal of press for Out Fly Fishing outfitters that we are very grateful for. Young guide Zach Southgate is on the cover with a large bull trout caught last summer. The photo was taken by our own Josh Nugent, who also has a 2 page spread with a 1/2 & 1/2 cutty shot from last season, as well as all the photos in the article written on the Bow’s status post floods! As many of you know one of our guides Naoto Aoki is also an extremely accomplished photographer and once again has another Cover shot, this time for Fly Fisherman Magazine. Congrats to Naoto, we couldn’t be prouder of him. This is his 8th Cover shot and his 4th different Magazine in which he has had a cover shot for. This is the Trailer for the Fly Nation Season 2 episode shot in Cayo Cruz, Cuba where Josh was very fortunate to have been able to go and host. The 2012 International Fly Fishing Film Festival also include a 12min feature of this shoot. As Out Fly Fishing outfitters has a booth down at the Western Canadian Fly Fishing Exposition in Spruce Meadows this year Jan 25-27. Out Fly Fishing outfitters booth will be beside the Echo Fly Fishing booth next to the casting pond, and like last year OFF guides will be using Echo MPR’s and Echo Gecko rods to do FREE casting instruction with the kids all weekend. The Promo video has shots of Naoto helping someone with their casting, the OFF booth, Josh’s jump off the cliff in last year’s IF4 and the Mountain Episode shot with Out Fly Fishing outfitters.

Josh was tying these flies like crazy as the bonefish were going nuts over them. Its actually a pattern called a Cayo Coco Loco that was originated by a local Calgary tier. We’ve never seen bonefish move so far to eat a fly as they did with this fly tied both in olive and natural colors. We left everyone we had with the guides down there and Josh spent hours tying them up in the evenings, both to fish during the shoot and to leave the guides with after the shoot.

Naoto and his brother Yoshi returned to Milton Lake Lodge in Northern Saskatchewan to guide for Trophy Northern Pike, Lake Trout, and Grayling, in June when the rivers back home are blown out and unfishable. Dean King and Josh Nugent also joined them up there and helped out with the guiding and the filming. Milton Lake Lodge is an incredible Lodge and one we would highly recommend to any guests looking for a trophy Pike and Lake Trout Lodge. Check out there website here: Milton Lake Lodge

In 2012 Bug Slinger came out witha bunch of new Buff’s. Featured in the commercial are some of the clips from the OFF Fly Nation Bow River shoot as well as the Cuba shoot Josh was on.

This was shot by Josh and edited and put together by Vantage Point Media House for Tubeology back in 2012. Very simple fly but big and effective both for getting big fish, and for showing up on camera! Everyone wants to see the big fish drill the fly, flies this size bring out the big boys and also make it easier for the cameraman to locate them through the view finder 😉

This is a clip from the Fly Nation TV Season 1 show shot with Out Fly Fishing outfitters guides Naoto Aoki and Josh Nugent on some of the mountain streams we do walk and wade trips on. The full episode aired on WFN and a short film submission aired during the 2011 International Fly Fishing Film Festival (IF4) circuit across North America. Bull trout chasing down and eating cutties like this is more common than most people think.

This is one of our favorite fly fishing commercials of all time! Bug Slinger Fly Gear Sponsored Season 1 of Fly Nation and we couldn’t have been happier to be reppin Bug Slinger swag. Its no surprise that Naoto had a photo a few photos in the mix but Josh also had one of his photos used in the commercial. This is the intro played at the beginning of each Fly Nation Season 1 Episode. You see Out Fly Fishing outfitters guides Naoto Aoki and Josh Nugent as well as shots from the bow river episode that featured several other Out Fly Fishing outfitters guides like Akasha Bopp and Todd Clark. There’s Noato casting for Atlantic Salmon from the rocks above the river in Iceland, a bow river brown trout sipping a PMD, Josh casting along the Bow and a few more. We’re really pleased that we could be a part of something so special. Fly Nation was a lot of fun and absolutly top notch people to work with. Naoto and Josh first met on a Fly Nation shoot, which led to Naoto moving back to Alberta to start guiding with Out Fly Fishing outfitters. Fly Nation was originally produced by Fly Max Films which now has Vantage Point Media House as their larger more encompassing parent company. Same people, even more impressive quality.
