We were so excited to be able to announce that Tim Arsenault, Canada’s top ranked Spey Caster of all time, was coming back to Calgary to do another Spey Casting Clinic. His Spey Casting Course was well attended and went extremely well and we had him fully booked on private Spey Casting Lessons on both Saturday afternoon and Sunday.
Tim had never caught a brown trout before so Josh took him out for two 4am stonefly floats before his clinic in the morning. The stone fly eats were incredible and Tim also got an eat from “Walter” but once again “Walter” swims to fight another day. More often than not fly anglers rip the big foam stones out of a fishes mouth before hey get a chance to close their mouth on the fly. The agony of waiting for these large fish to slowly roll or sip under these giant flies is so often more than people can take and they set too soon, or a fish will explode on the giant foam bug with such speed and force it startles the person or hits so fats they miss it making the large fish harder to hook than most people would like. Interestingly enough this was not Tim’s issue. Tim, a seasoned and accomplished steelheader, is used to waiting and being patient when a steelhead rolls on a dry and not setting until the fish takes line. Despite the fact that “Walter” may be approaching steelhead size, a hookset was still required and Walter, like many of the fish Tim saw eat his foam bug swam off unscathed 😉 Tim did accomplish his goal of landing a brown trout and shortly there after bested the brown he had caught.
He also landed a few monster and very impressive rainbows . 18 eats on a 2hr float is a pretty action packed and exciting morning and made for a very happy (along with being Very talented) Spey Casting Instructor. In Tim’s defense the second float saw 4 out of the first 5 eats all with landed fish. We were even able to sneak Tim out to the mountains for a quick dry fly fish for cutties before we had to put him on a plane and send him home.
Not to worry though Tim will be back September 12 & 13th to do a “Steelhead Primer” Course on Saturday and then private lessons again on the Sunday. We couldn’t have had more fun with Tim here and are so grateful for his incredible instruction and patience as as Spey Casting Instructor. Thank you again Tim and we can’t wait to see you out here again in September.
