After years of research and amazingly successful hosted trips in 2010 and 2011, Out Fly Fishing outfitters has once again teamed up with Slipstream Angling Adventures, specializing in hosted fly fishing travel. Out Fly Fishing Outfitters have been going down to Belize since 2007 and after several incredible trips is convinced these guides are the hardest working guides on the island. Typical guide days in Belize are 8hrs but these guides did whatever it took to put our group on fish and never counted hrs. In fact in 6 days of guiding we spent more time on the water then in a 9 day trip done there with guides other hosts had recommended.
The charming little beach town of San Pedro, on Ambergris Caye, is a great place to base yourself for a week of fishing in Belize. This thriving island community has just about everything that an angler could want: great restaurants, lots of bars, and outstanding shallow water fishing for bonefish, permit and tarpon.
The Accommodations:
The hotel is located right on the beach and is about a 5 minute walk into the main part of town. The rooms are nice and cozy, with 2 double beds, private bath with hot and cold water, and cable TV. The pool overlooks the warm Caribbean Sea and the pier where guests are picked up and dropped for fishing is right at the hotel. Breakfast is served at 6:15 am and the guides arrive for pick up at 7am. The average day on the water is 8 hours in length but if guests are into fish, the guides will keep you out longer.
The Fishing:
The San Pedro fishing area is made up of large mangrove islands and bays, semi soft marl, healthy turtle grass flats and some good hard packed sand flats to the north, which are excellent for wading. The reef side, north of San Pedro, heading all the way up to the Mexican border, is also a great bonefishing. If the weather is calm, a day up at Rocky Point, where the reef angles into the island, is extremely productive and makes a fabulous day trip. The tarpon fishing to the west of San Pedro is consistently some of the best found anywhere.
The Savannah Flats are world famous for their ability to produce tarpon year round. Juvenile fish in the 25 to 50 pound range can be found throughout the year. Not many people know it but good numbers of permit live within the Ambergris Caye area year round as well. Permit will usually be found in about 6 to 12 feet of water so all shots will be from the bow of the boat as opposed to wading. Our coastline has a vast array of rivers, lagoons and brackish estuaries that hold every imaginable species of fish that lives in these environments. Inside the reef, the cayes, sandbars and tidal flats, are dynamic fish producing habitats.
If you’re serious about chasing a “Slam”, there are few places better. The skinny water fishing is that good and it’s supported by a guide base that is first rate.
The Flats Skiffs at San Pedro are 23 foot Mexican Skiffs powered by 40-60 horse powered engines. Each boat has room for two anglers and a large casting platform
